Acting Interns function as primary physicians for in-patients with both acute and chronic medical problems in the context of a community medical center with overnight call with the ward team every fourth night. Medical problems are complex and diverse in the patient population, and opportunities for direct hands on patient care are extensive. Students work with the interns, residents and USCSM faculty, as well as the practicing physicians in the Columbia community. Education material is presented via attending rounds, didactic lectures, subspecialty lectures, weekly grand rounds, resident case presentations, rounds with residents, clinical pathologic conferences, etc. These assignments offer an opportunity for students to learn and experience practical clinical medicine.
