ACTING INTERNSHIP
Faculty: John Herbert, M.D. - AI Director Institution: Palmetto Health Richland/WJBD VA Hospital Location: Columbia, South Carolina Duration: 4-6 weeks Course Offered: Periods 3-9 Number of Students: 1 Per Period Students Report To: Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology (779-4928), 2 Medical Park, Suite 208, 8:30 a.m. Acting Interns function at the level of a first year resident for OB/GYN in both the inpatient and outpatient settings. Session may be divided into 2 or 4 week rotations; subsetted into:1) MFM -Proctoring with Dr. Anthony Gregg in Ultrasound, Labor & Delivery, High Risk Clinic, Genetics. During the Acting Internship experience in MFM, Acting Interns will have an opportunity to get a more in depth exposure to general obstetrical problems, maternal medical problems and disorders of the fetus. Disorders of the fetus will include genetic abnormalities, birth defects, and alterations in fetal physiology. The Acting Intern will round with the attending physician daily and accompany the attending to all resident clinics and prenatal diagnosis sessions. Learning will take place through patient contact, literature review and the preparation and presentation of case relevant material. Acting Interns will have an opportunity to acquire skills in Ultrasound and Amniocentesis. The student should have an excellent overview of MFM as a career option. The student will acquire skills specific to this discipline. Attendance, presentation of pertinent patient information and bedside manner will form the primary measure of success on this rotation. In addition, the Acting Intern will be required to give one scholarly presentation to students, residents, and/or staff in order to obtain a grade. Guidance for this presentation will be provided by the MFM attending. 2. GYN - Participating in out-patient Clinics, Richland Community Health Clinic, VA Women's Primary Care and GYN Surgical Clinics , and Ultrasoundsonography. 3.OB - Labor and Delivery, Antenatal and Post Partum Management with clinic responsibilities. Student swill work with USCSM faculty, staff, genetic staff and U/S staff. Academic are covered through Grand Rounds. Colpo/Pathology Conferences, Pediatric/Adolescent GYN conferences, NICU/MFM conferences, M&M, rounds and case presentations. Acting Interns will participate in Night Call rotation and Labor and Delivery every 5th night. Rotation allows Acting Interns the ability to structure their time with emphasis on personal preference in the field of OB/GYN.
