Acting Interns (AI) serve as junior surgical house officers to patients with both acute and chronic surgical problems. During the 4 week rotation, students will spend time on one or more of the surgical services. These services consist of general/surgical oncology or  trauma and vascular surgery. Students will take in-house call with surgical residents every fourth night. When on call both residents and faculty will supervise AI activities. They will be exposed to busy general, vascular and trauma surgery services. The student’s experience will include patient encounters in the ICUs, surgical floors, trauma department and various outpatient settings. Students work with the interns, residents and GHS surgical faculty. Acting Interns also will be expected to participate in the education of the junior medical students rotating through their surgical clerkships. Educational material is presented through attending and resident rounds, didactic lectures, sub-specialty conferences, bi-monthly  grand rounds, and weekly morbidity/mortality conferences. Acting Interns attend all specialty conferences. Students are expected to function at the level of a junior surgical house officer.
