INFORMATION FOR VISITING STUDENTS

USCSM will accept visiting medical students for extramural electives from any United States or Canadian medical school fully accredited by the Liaison Committee on Medical Education (LCME) of the Association of American Medical Colleges (AAMC) and the American Medical Association (AMA) or by the American Osteopathic Association (AOA). A visiting student must be currently enrolled and in good academic standing as a candidate for the M.D. or D.O. degree at his/her home school and have completed all required clerkships at the home school prior to initiating elective work at USCSM. Electives are generally of four weeks duration. Visiting students are scheduled on a space-available basis. Students are not required to pay tuition.  A processing fee of fifty dollars ($50.00) per elective, due at the time of application, is assessed of each out-of-state student.

Visiting students are responsible for their own personal health care costs and must provide current documentation of immunization status. Limited housing is available in Columbia on a first-come, first-serve basis. USCSM M-IV Electives

Visiting students interested in taking a fourth-year elective at USCSM should contact Ms. Lisa Watkins, Office of Admissions and Enrollment Services, School of Medicine, University of South Carolina, Columbia, S.C. 29208, (803) 733-3325, for the form, Application for Extramural Elective, and an information packet or download these forms:  Instructions, Application, Immunization Form, Multi-System Request Form, Non Employee Confidential /HIPPA Form.   (Forms are PDF files and Adobe Acrobate Reader is required.  If you have problems printing the Immunization Form, change your printer setting to 400 DPI or less.)  Any application received that has not been completed in its entirety, including the $50.00 check, will be returned to the applicant. Therefore, applications cannot be faxed.  Applications will be processed after May 1st of the applicant's third year of medical school and no later than six weeks prior to the elective's starting date.  The applicant will be notified as soon as departmental approval or disapproval has been received by the USCSM Director of Enrollment Services/Registrar.  Students who are unable to attend an approved elective are responsible for notifying the USCSM Office of Admissions and Enrollment Services of cancellation as soon as possible.
