The South Carolina Area Health Education Consortium (SCAHEC), in cooperation with the Medical University of South Carolina College of Medicine and the University of South Carolina School of Medicine, offers an outstanding elective program for all senior medical students in South Carolina. The purpose of the elective program is to: (1) enhance the student’s academic program through community experiences outside the major health science centers, (2) broaden the student’s perspective of health care, (3) heighten the student’s awareness of community health care support facilities, and (4) improve the likelihood of students selecting a South Carolina community in which to practice. The graduate and undergraduate medical education programs in Anderson, Columbia, Greenville, Greenwood, Florence and Spartanburg offer unique academic and career opportunities. The uniqueness of an almost one-to-one teaching relationship, coupled with increased clinical responsibilities, adds an important ingredient to the development of a student's clinical skills. Community settings offer students an opportunity to evaluate hospital-based residencies and the opportunity to work with faculty and residents of these hospitals. Various benefits include meals, housing and mileage.

All SCAHEC electives are listed in this section of the catalog. Any USC students interested in a SCAHEC course will register with the USCSM Director of Enrollment Services/Registrar. VISITING STUDENTS must contact:
