(803) 791-2541 UNAVAILABLE UNTIL FURTHER NOTICE This rotation will introduce the student to the practice of Emergency Medicine in a busy suburban community hospital. The student will be exposed to all aspects of emergency care including care of the emergent, urgent and non-urgent patient. The student's experience will include taking histories, performing physical examinations, ordering and interpreting diagnostic tests, documenting information on the emergency department chart, and preparing appropriate discharge plans including medications/treatments, patient instructions, disposition and follow-up. The experience will focus on key problems in both pediatric and adult emergency medicine, primarily examining how decisions are made on an emergent basis to rule out (or "in") a life threatening condition. Students will also have the opportunity to learn certain basic technical skills (e.g. suturing, orthopaedic splinting, intravenous cannulation, etc.). The student will be responsible for a short paper or presentation on a particular aspect of emergency medicine or an interesting case in emergency medicine and a test will be given. Clinical exposure will be done under the direction of staff emergency physicians. |
