(803) 434-7101 The hyperbaric medicine program at Palmetto Richland Memorial Hospital is a multidisciplinary team of individuals, many of who play a dual role as practitioners and educators for hyperbaric therapy. Palmetto Health Richland is home of the largest training program in the Americas and is responsible for 60% of all newly credentialed consultants. Over the past two decades, HBO has matured into a clinically efficacious therapy for a select group of diseases, which will increase as our understanding of oxygen as a physiologic substrate and pharmacologic agent further expands. This rotation will provide exposure to the clinical practice of hyperbaric medicine and may provide exposure to various research activities that are ongoing. The student will become familiar with the physics and physiology of the hyperbaric environment and the situations in which it can be used to benefit various medical conditions, including emergency indications for hyperbaric therapy. Participation in elective and emergent consults to other services will be expected, and the student will carry a pager while on the service. The student will evaluate and present these cases on a daily basis. In addition, the student will learn how to operate a hyperbaric chamber and will be capable of providing an HBO treatment to a patient. Eligibility for this rotation does require that it coincide with one of the "Primary Training in Hyperbaric Medicine" courses that are offered throughout the year. |
