The objective of this rotation is to provide MS-IV students with experience in the clinical concepts and procedures used in surgical critical care.  Under the supervision of faculty and residents, students provide comprehensive ICU care for complex trauma, vascular, neurosurgical, and general surgery patients.  Students also participate in trauma resuscitations in the Emergency Department.  Students are expected to be an integral part of the ICU team and assist in daily rounds, evaluating new consults, coordinating care with primary team, and performing procedures.  There is also opportunity to participate in simulation center activities.  Students are expected to present two brief oral reports on assigned topics for Critical Care teaching rounds conference over the course of the rotation.  Clinical education is supplemented with The Society of Critical Care Medicine's Intensive Care online course, didactic lectures, and daily conferences.  Evaluation of the student’s performance is based on the six surgery core competencies.
